Realmac Software is an independent software company based in Brighton, England.[1][2][3][4] Dan Counsell founded the company in November 2002 and serves as its director.[5]

History[edit]

In November 2002, Dan Counsell founded Realmac Software.[5][6][7] The company released RapidWeaver, a template-based website editor, in 2004.[8] Realmac Software acquired EventBox, a social media app, from its developers, The Cosmic Machine, in October 2009.[9][10] Realmac Software released Clear, a to-do list app, for iOS in January and Mac operating systems in November 2012.[11] The app reached spot two on the Apple Mac App Store behind Apple's Mountain Lion operating system.[11] The app was also listed on FierceDeveloper's list of 'Top Apps' in February 2012.[12] FierceDeveloper named Realmac Software a '2012 Rising Star of Mobile Development' that November.[12]

The company released Analog, a photo manipulation software, in May 2013.[13][14] The following month, Realmac Software released Ember, an app designed to capture and organize screenshots.[3] The company announced the release of Typed, an OS X app for writing in Markdown, in July 2014.[1] That October, Clear was ranked 12th on Business Insider's list of 'The World's Greatest Apps.'[15]

Newsroom can present your RSS feed as a simple list, newspaper-style columns, blocks or tables. A wide choice of style settings are provided to let you control the presentation of news items to your exact design. We use simple HTML / CSS feed styles to promote better website accessibility and improve compatibility with other addons you may be using.
Newsroom works with most (not all) RSS feeds. Either RSS feeds you are hosting yourself (like a blog RSS feed) or an RSS feed generated by an outside blog or news service. Newsroom can be used on websites with an SSL certificate, as we've shown here. A free demo version is provided for you to download and fully test Newsroom against the RSS feeds you plan on using the stack with. The stack has fairly modest server requirements (detailed below in the setup instructions).
What's good about Newsroom is that the content it displays can update 24/7. So even when you are not working to write new blog articles or other website content, your website can continue to update with fresh, quality content. It can give a reason for website visitors to continue returning. With little effort, you could build quite a comprehensive news website combining multiple Newsroom stacks.

Examples

These are some examples of the Newsroom stack placed inside a regular Stacks 3-column stack. We are fetching the first 4 news articles from the Realmac Software blog. You can see how the examples below use the same styling and colours used for this webpage; giving a much more seamless and integrated appearance. However it's certainly feasible to combine Newsroom with other stacks, to create more of a stand-out appearance of your choosing. All the normal padding, margin, border and background settings are available for you to use.

  • Introducing Squash 3 for macOS

Squash 3 for Mac has been in development for over six months and has been rewritten from the ground-up using all the latest Apple technologies. The entire app has been re-imagined with a complete new user interface and tonnes of useful new features.

    What does Squash do?

Squash 3 offers a way to quickly batch process images. Everything from resizing, converting, applying filters, to compressing, and renaming.

Built to be fast and easy to use, Squash 3 simply asks that you drag your photos or images onto it and select what you'd like it to do. That's it. No complication, no fuss. And all in an app that's right at home on modern Macs running macOS Big Sur.

A user interface with charm and character

Squash 3 has moved away from the flat design trends of the past few years and introduced a more rounded UI, with drop shadows, gradients, and playful sounds. It's also introduced a gloriously skeuomorphic icon that still sits nicely in the macOS Big Sur dock.

An interesting note about the new photo filter system

All of the vintage camera effects and borders that were built into Analog for Mac (and iOS) are now available for Squash 3 as filter packs.

A Short History: Analog for Mac launched back in 2011 and was a much loved app by many Mac users around the world. Unfortunately, Analog was acquired by another company and never improved upon. For many years, Analog was left to rot in the digital graveyard, due to system compatibility it was eventually removed from sale. Rather than let all that engineering and the meticulously researched vintage effects go to waste, Realmac Software reacquired Analog for Mac and iOS in 2020 and ported the effects system into Squash 3.

    Get Squash

Squash 3 Requires macOS 10.14 Big Sur or newer (also runs great on Monterey).

Squash 3 is universal app and runs natively on Intel and Apple Silicon M1 Macs.

Setup

Follow these instructions for setting-up an RSS feed, to display your first feed within Newsroom..
  1. Download the stack and install it into Stacks / RapidWeaver in the normal way. Open your Stacks Library and search for 'Newsroom'. Drag and drop a copy of the stack into your webpage.
  2. With the stack selected in edit mode, use the Feed Source setting to use either your own RSS feed or experiment with one of the sample ones listed.
  3. Other settings relating to the behaviour, display and style of the feed can be customised safely in the stack settings. You can perform actions like supplying a title for the RSS feed and customising how descriptions are presented. Please note that the 'Bootstrap List Group' style only works in ThemeFlood themes.
  4. Preview your webpage in RapidWeaver to check things are working as expected. Your webpage requires a .php file extension, which Newsroom will attempt to set for you in the Page Inspector.

Newsroom requires a web server running PHP 7.0 or greater. It fetches RSS feeds using PHP cURL, which is a common library that allows PHP to make HTTP requests. In this case, we use cURL to fetch the RSS feed from another web server. cURL should already be enabled on your web hosting account and is an essential requirement for Newsroom to work. You can safely use multiple Newsroom stacks on the same webpage, to fetch different RSS feeds.

Custom CSS

Beyond the existing style and colour settings presented within the stack, Newsroom can be extensively customised with custom CSS. If you have any experience of using CSS, then this process opens options to radically change the appearance of Newsroom and 'tweak' just about anything to your liking. Each Newsroom feed comprises of an HTML unordered list and list items. The unordered list has a class of newsroom_list and each news item has a class of newsroom_list_item. Within each list item you have a divisional container with a class of newsroom_item_internal. Then you have each individual element of the news items as follows:
These elements correspond to the same elements you can toggle on and off in the stack settings, using the checkboxes. Because we are using a CSS Flexbox system to layout each news item, the 'order' numbers permit you to change the ordering of these items. The higher the number, the further down the news item the element is placed. For example, if you wanted to change the date to show first, you could set its order to 1 and change the ordering of other items accordingly.
The name of the feed can be displayed at the top. This can be useful in instances where you are embedding multiple feeds and need headings to denote where they each start and end. The newsroom_feed_heading class can be used to restyle this element.

How do I find the RSS link?

Some websites will prominently display an orange / white RSS feed icon. Some websites may place the RSS link on a blog sidebar or within the footer of the webpage. Your web browser may also display an RSS icon in its address bar, depending on the browser used. Copy the link using the right button on your mouse and paste it into Newsroom. Remember that the RSS feed must be available publicly (an RSS feed in a passworded or private membership website will not work). If you are certain a website has an RSS feed (like a website built with Wordpress) but you cannot see the link, open the page source code in your web browser. CMD + F to search the source code and look for a link ending in rss, or xml as that is likely to be an RSS feed you could use.

RSS compatibility

RSS is an officially recognised web standard. However some feeds may include invalid markup or content that Newsroom cannot display. Obviously there is little that can be done to fix a malformed RSS feed from within Newsroom. You will find Newsroom works great for simple RSS feeds; less-so for complicated feeds that include non-standard code or complicated media types. Always download and try the free demo version of Newsroom before committing to a purchase, if you need to check the suitability of Newsroom with specific news feeds, because refunds cannot be given. You can check an RSS feed uses valid markup by testing it with the W3C Feed Validation Service.

Copyright

You need to consider that Newsroom fetches content from websites and embeds it directly within your website. Personal use of RSS doesn't normally carry many limitations. However re-publishing RSS feeds in websites (especially commercial websites, where there is advertising or other revenue being made) needs careful consideration. If in doubt, always ask first if you may reuse a third-party RSS feed in your website.
